The Lunar Museum or how art appeared out of Earth

How did Mickey Mouse get to the moon and what kind of Andy Warhol's creation is in the first miniature museum of creativity in space? We are talking about one of NASA's most unusual projects.

The desire of people to bring art to all aspects of life has not neglected the cosmic sphere.

For example, in 1969, the American sculptor Forrest Myers, during astronaut flights to the moon, decided to give life to a unique project. On a ceramic plate less than an inch, Myers, along with scientists from the nonprofit group Experiments in Art and Technology, recorded six drawings by famous contemporary American artists.

In the top row were Andy Warhol's spaceship, Robert Rauschenberg's line, and a black square with thin white lines from David Novros crossing each other. In the bottom row were John Chamberlain's Outline, Claes Oldenburg's geometric Mickey Mouse, and Forrest Myers' computer drawing, Relationship.

The sculptor therefore created a miniature museum of these six works and offered to send it to the moon. All works were created specifically for the designed project.

Myers tried several times to get his idea approved by NASA, but all of his attempts were unsuccessful. However, according to one version, the sculptor decided to take a detour and met engineer Fred Valdhauerom, who was able to secretly attach the plate to the lunar spacecraft "Apollo-12".

In total, 16 such plates were created, and only one was attached to the landing gear leg. The rest was handed over to the artists themselves and to other members of the project.

Participants in the action hid the fact of their detention until Forrest Myers informed the New York Times. On November 22, 1969, the newspaper published an article on the project.

One of the NASA representatives in an interview with the New York Times commented: “I did not know that artists attached their work to the module, but if it is true that they managed to do it in a secret way , I hope the work represents the best of art. Contemporary American ".

Just as the article on the "Museum of the Moon" campaign was published, "Apollo 12" returns to Earth. The spacecraft's flight program included landing on the moon, collecting samples of lunar soil, and installing scientific instruments. This program has been fully implemented.

The Lunar Museum is considered the first object of space art, it is also recognized as the most extraordinary work of Forrest Myers, who subsequently gained many followers. At present, it is difficult to say whether the Lunar Museum is actually located on the Moon, but of course the concept of such an author could go down in the history of art.
